That turned out to be accurate, and after 574 miles of mostly highway driving, my trip fuel economy was 29.1 mpg. After charging at home on my Level 2 charger, I started the trip with 27 miles of all-electric range. How well did the 2024 CX-90 live up to those numbers on my drive? It exceeded expectations. This is a bit better than the 2023 CX-9’s EPA rating of 23 mpg combined from its non-hybrid, turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain. It also has a 56 mpg-e quivalent rating from the EPA. The CX-90 PHEV uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, electric motor, eight-speed automatic transmission and 17.8- kilowatt-hour battery pack it makes 323 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque on premium gas or 319 hp on regular, and it gets 26 miles of all-electric range and 25 mpg combined when the all-electric range is depleted, according to EPA estimates. Real-World Range and MPG 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV (It was maroon) | photo by Jennifer Geiger To find out whether it does, I loaded the CX-90 with three women and three girls and took it on a mini road trip from Chicago to Detroit for a Taylor Swift concert and found out all too well that carting a bunch of people and stuff - and getting good fuel economy - is a tall order, but the CX-90 was mostly up to the task. Three-row SUVs aren’t known as fuel sippers, but a plug-in hybrid powertrain should help. Mazda is in the latter camp with its first plug-in hybrid in the U.S., the 2024 CX-90 PHEV. As some automakers go all in with electric vehicles, others are taking a more gradual approach and adding hybrids and plug-in hybrids to their lineups.
